Croydon carers Jean and Eric Hills celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at the Carers Support Centre on Friday 8 September 2017.

The couple were treated to presents, cake and lunch at the Carers Support Centre, a drop-in support centre for unpaid carers in George Street. Local carers and Carers Support Centre staff and volunteers all came together to join the celebration.

Jean and Eric were married on 8th September 1967 at St Mark’s Church, Mitcham, and have been carers for their disabled son since he was born.

Jean Hills said, “It was a lovely wedding, I did all my own catering. But when we came to cut the cake I realised I’d forgotten the knife. We had to cut it with a spoon!”

Both carers attend the Carers Support Centre regularly, visiting the Carers Café and taking part in activities such as dance and carers’ lunches.

Jean Hills said: “I’m overwhelmed. I thought we’d be celebrating today on our own. It’s such a nice surprise. A special thank you to everyone for making this happen.”

Helen Thompson, Carers Support Centre manager, said: “Jean and Eric are both dedicated carers for their son, and it’s been wonderful to celebrate such a special day with them. We love seeing them at the centre and wish them many more years together.”
