Sharing carer stories for National Dementia Carers Day

National Dementia Carers Day (10 September) is a chance to recognise the invisible army of carers supporting friends, family members and neighbours with dementia. There are around 850,000 people with dementia in the UK, a number set to rise to over two million by 2051.

The theme for this year’s National Dementia Carers Day is ‘sharing’. Every person’s caring story is unique, so we invited local carers to share their personal thoughts and experiences:

“I consider myself lucky looking after my wife who has dementia (Alzheimer’s). We live in a time when dementia is more widely publicised and the public at large understand more. It makes it easier when we go out and do things like shopping. If my wife starts behaving strangely, people say, don’t worry, we understand.”

“I didn’t have a clue about dementia when I started. My main support has been the Alzheimer’s Society in Croydon - without them I’d be up the creek without a paddle. They helped me understand the path I was on.

I try to stay upbeat but my stress levels are higher than they’ve ever been, and I miss spending time with the grandchildren. Time with friends and family is getting increasingly difficult and embarrassing, so I generally avoid social occasions.

I want to care for my wife for as long as I possibly can, but it is getting more difficult. I feel I go under the radar for NHS and social care. I feel sorry for people who can’t cope.”

“My wife has dementia. I received wonderful support from the home nurses. One question though - who cares for the carers?”
